The Calgary Herald is a Canadian newspaper published in Calgary, Alberta. This newspaper has a long history, printed since 1883, when Andrew Armour and Thomas Braden created “The Calgary Herald, Mining and Rance Advocate and General Advertiser”, which started out as a 4-page, hand-printed weekly with a modest distribution. It can even be said to exist before Calgary was incorporated as a city.
For the year 1885 the Herald begins to publish daily, being until 1983 when it begins to publish seven days a week. The Calgary Herald began as an evening newspaper, until 1985 when it began to be published in the mornings, and has remained so to this day. This newspaper also publishes the Neighbours community newspaper, which is distributed together in some localities in Calgary.
As for its owners, we can mention that in 2000 it was purchased by Southam Newspapers, a subsidiary of CanWest News Services of CanWest Global Communications. It is currently part of the Posmedia group, a newly created company that brings together an important number of publications in Canada, providing a solid base to support local newspapers and weeklies.
The Calgary Herald has thus become the city’s most reliable source of information, in conjunction with the Calgary SUN, the sister newspaper with which it shares the editorial headquarters, making it the city’s largest editorial hall.
