History of the Edmonton Journal
In 1903, the first issue of the Edmonton Journal was published, thanks to its founding by businessmen John Macpherson, JW Cunnigham and Arthur Moore. At that time the Canadian state of Alberta had the Edmonton Bulletin, making these newspapers great rivals.
The Edmonton Journal took a conservative stance in its early days because it supported the Conservative Party of Canada. This represented great ideological battles with his rival Edmonton Bulletin who had a purely liberal stance.
The Edmonton Journal originally belonged to the Southam family from 1912 until 1996, the latter year being purchased by the Hollinger International group. Already in 2010, is part of the group Postmedia Network Inc, which still owns its property.
This important newspaper was commemorated with a special bronze plaque for press freedom by the Pulitzer Prize in 1938. This is due to the fact that this newspaper confronted Prime Minister William Aberhart for being against the Precise News and Information Law that ordered to print the government’s rebuttals against the provincial cabinet.
