This Canadian Newspaper is distributed in the city of Edmonton, Canada. It was born in 1978 as a tabloid, a format that is still preserved today. Like many Sun Media newspapers, the Edmonton Sun stands out because its news is exclusively local, belonging to the region in which it is distributed. By 2015, it was part of a large number of local newspapers purchased by Postmedia Network. This Canadian print media giant bought the rights from Sun Media in the same year, forming part of this chain.
Since its inception, the Edmonton Sun has maintained a highly conservative stance on news publishing. It attaches great importance to the sports news of the town of Edmonton. The Edmonton Sun is also famous for including a Sunshine Girl in its pages. This concept refers to the inclusion of a page dedicated to a photo with a girl in a swimsuit. In addition, once a year this newspaper launches a special edition of swimwear. For the Christmas season, it is the tradition of the Edmonton Sun to launch an edition of lingerie.
The Edmonton Sun, as well as many other Canadian newspapers, have seen their sales reduced in recent years. Since 2009, the circulation of local printed newspapers has fallen by 37%. This is due to several factors, but the main one, as has happened globally, has been the boom in web news.
Postmedia Network Canada Corporation
This Canadian print media empire is based in Toronto, Canada. Paul Godfrey, editor of the National Post, pride of Postmedia and one of the leading national newspapers across Canada, decides to bring together some owners of newspapers from the late Canwest. In 2009, the latter filed for bankruptcy, which was how the company that is now Postmedia Network began to form.
In 2014, Postmedia announced the acquisition of the rights, just like Canwest, of the convalescent Sun Media. This transfer took place the following year and with the purchase of its properties, Postmedia acquired a large number of assets, including the tabloid Edmonton Sun. The company also runs the newspaper’s website.
