History of The Globe and Mail Newspaper
For The Globe and Mail it all began in 1844, when The Globe was founded by Scot George Brown. It began as an organism of the Reform Party of Canada, which followed the political ideals of its founder.
Later its founder realized the profits he could generate with this newspaper that opted to deal with broader liberal issues. However, his motto is “The subject who is truly loyal to the Chief Magistrate will neither submit nor advise him on arbitrary measures” which is still maintained on the editorial page to this day.
Little by little it was gaining popularity and becoming more and more distributed even in other cities by train. At the beginning of the 20th century, they added photography and even a section for women.
On November 23, 1936, The Globe decides to merge with The Mail and Empire newspaper, already adopting its current name of The Globe and Mail. By 1952, it was acquired by the Webster family in Montreal, at which time it expanded more nationally.
By 1965, The Globe and Mail was acquired by FP Publications who focused more on the business section. In this way it became a window for Canadian entrepreneurs.
By 1980, both The Globe and Mail newspaper and the FP Publications group were purchased by The Thompson Corporation group. By 2001, the newspaper merged with Bell Canada Radio and Television, forming Bell Globemedia.
